I am a Sucka

I called my credit card today to close it down aaaand that did not happen.

I have an airline mile credit card that I have had since I graduated college. I got suckered into it because it gave me a free flight to anywhere within the continental USA! The annual fee started at $85 and now I am paying $95. It has been a 'great' card throughout the years like I never have to pay for luggage flying this airline and I actually have flown them multiple times.

Now that I got enough points again to get a flight for FREE (and used it for the Florida trip!) I don't have any use for this card anymore. It had a 23.99% APR - what the heck! The $95 annual fee doesn't look great either.

So I called and tried to close the account - obvi they asked why I wanted to close and that they have promotions right now that I might be interested in. I was stuck in traffic so why not listen to it.... They all sounded great - the APR will be lowered to 9.9%+Prime (13% something total APR) and the $95 fee last January will be reimbursed. Then the customer service told me something about gaining airline points if I purchase something from the card within 6mo. but I kinda blocked that off already.

I want the $95 back that I paid and will be closing the account once that gets posted. I specifically asked the representative about this and she said that's the way to go.

So I am a sucka for $95, but at least its $95 more into the budget... yay!!!!

  2. I think you did a smart thing, $95 is nothing to sneeze at and you are still closing the card :)

  3. Makes sense to me. I have a British Airways card that I'll be closing this January to avoid another years' fee. I'm hoping when I call they will reimburse or take away the fee so I keep using it for the airline miles. If not I'll be closing it.

  5. That sounds like a totally reasonable decision to me! I don't think you're a sucka for doing that :) They are un-doing the things that you didn't like about the card, so why not keep it to get your money back if they lowered the APR.
